Modular Path Planning for Automated Component Inspection

In the ModSys3D research project, 3D.aero GmbH and the Institute of Aircraft Production Technology (IFPT) at Hamburg University of Technology are developing a modular system for the automated 3D inspection of aircraft components. The project focuses on flexible inspection path planning, high-resolution measurement technologies, and the integration of different sensor data. The aim is to make inspection processes more efficient and adaptable to different components and inspection requirements.

As the project consortium leader, 3D.aero contributes its extensive expertise in high-precision optical component inspection. Together with IFPT, the partners are researching modular hardware and software solutions that combine advanced sensor technology, robotics, and AI-based data analysis. These developments aim to create new opportunities for automated quality assurance and future maintenance, repair, and overhaul processes in aviation.

Project Objectives

  • Development of modular path planning for flexible and automated 3D inspection

  • Advancement of high-resolution metrology and fusion of microscopic and macroscopic sensor data

  • Research into collaborative human-robot inspection processes

  • AI-based detection and analysis of surface defects

Benefits for the Aviation Industry

ModSys3D aims to advance automated quality inspection of aircraft components, particularly in support of future maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) operations. The modular system approach is designed to enable inspection solutions to adapt to different component geometries and inspection tasks. By combining precise measurement technologies, flexible robotics, and artificial intelligence, the project seeks to improve inspection efficiency and support reliable detection of quality deviations. Key areas of focus include:

•
Flexible inspection through modular path planning
•
Comprehensive component evaluation through sensor fusion
•
Efficient inspection workflows through human-robot collaboration
•
Reliable defect detection through AI
